Tierra Nueva

In Peru, safe and sound.

In short, it's been a long day of traveling.  I woke up bright and early at 4:30 to get to the Detroit airport for my 7am flight to Miami.  Once in Miami I did an unintentional grand tour of the wonderful Miami airport. So, there were apparently two flights to Lima leaving at 4:35 on complete opposite sides of the U-shaped, and of course I didn't have the foresight to double check the flight number... such a great move. If any of you are planning on having a layover in Miami, I can guide you to the best airport food kiosks Miami has to offer, a lucrative offer, I know.

The 5 hour flight from Miami to Lima was rather uneventful.  Unfortunately, it was dark when we were through the Gulf of Mexico so I couldn't see any vistas of the Andes.  But landing in Lima was really cool!  We flew right along the Pacific coast and landed in the middle of a maze of lights, since the airport is in the middle of the city.  Once landed I met up with Lauren, Lena, Emily (all in my program) and the FIMRC driver who drove us to the Che Legarto hostel.  Lima's an awesome city just to drive through.  It has tons of different types of architecture, barrios, and is right on the ocean.  Apparently LIma is much quieter now than normal.  We learned from people at the hostel that all of Lima is currently under a "dry period" due to the elections and it's strictly enforced.  Also, they have a mandatory voting process, where if you don't vote you get fined, so different from the states!

Tomorrow we're off to Huancayo, which is apparently an 8 hour bus ride that takes us from sea level to an elevation of two miles above sea level!  Honestly, I've been awake now for about 21.5 hours and I really need to sleep.  I'm sure this post is incredibly disjointed, sorry guys!
